He is a consultant psychiatrist at Greater Manchester Mental Health Trust Living Well team Trafford, specializing in general adult psychiatry.
Previous Work
He spent many years in Northern Ireland with the Northern Health and Social Care Trust, where he served as the lead psychiatrist Community Mental Health Team Carrickfergus and Clinical Lead for the adult autistic spectrum diagnostic service. More recently he was Clinical Director for Mental Health Services in Oldham Pennine Care Foundation Trust.

His key voluntary and community roles include:
- Counselling All Nations (CANS): Dr Tareen has been a core member of this Northern Ireland-based charity, which provides counselling services to individuals whose first language is not English, including refugees and asylum seekers. One of his colleagues noted that he played a primary role in setting up this much-needed service.
- International Trauma Projects: He has led international capacity-building initiatives to train mental health professionals in developing countries on trauma treatment. He is an expert in using Eye Movement Desensitisation and Reprocessing (EMDR)for this purpose.
- Academic and Professional Mentorship: Beyond his clinical duties, he contributes to the voluntary development of the next generation of medical professionals by teaching at Queen’s University Belfast and as a fellow of the Royal College of Psychiatrists.
